Char Siu Chicken

A delicious Asian-inspired dish featuring juicy chicken thighs coated in a sweet and savory marinade.

  • Total Time: 150 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil.
  3. Place chicken thighs in a large resealable plastic bag.
  4. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, seal the bag, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or up to overnight).
  5. Cover and refrigerate the remaining marinade separately.
  6. Remove the marinated chicken from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  7. Place chicken thighs on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.
  9. While chicken is cooking, transfer the reserved marinade to a small saucepan, bring to a boil, and simmer for about 10 minutes to thicken.
  10. Brush the cooked chicken with the thickened marinade.
  11. Broil the chicken for an additional 2-3 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.
  12. Once caramelized and slightly charred, remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best flavor, let the chicken marinate overnight. Add red pepper flakes for extra spice if desired.
