Glazed Easter Bread

A delightful and festive sweet bread flavored with nutmeg and lemon zest, perfect for celebrating Easter with a sweet glaze and colorful sprinkles.

  • Total Time: 90 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk and butter until warm; then add to the dry ingredients.
  3. Beat in the eggs, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 60 minutes or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place the loaf in a greased loaf pan and let it rise again for 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  9. Let the bread cool completely.
  10. For the glaze, mix the powdered sugar and milk until smooth, then drizzle it over the bread.
  11. Add sprinkles if desired.

Notes

Make sure the milk and butter mixture is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast. Knead well for a fluffier bread. Consider adding dried fruits or using orange zest for flavor variations.
