Instructions
- Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour into a bowl and set aside.
- Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form, gradually adding the granulated sugar until stiff peaks form.
- Fold in the sifted almond flour and powdered sugar mixture, adding food coloring if desired.
- Pipe heart shapes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Let the piped macarons rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour to form a dry skin.
- Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and bake the macarons for 18 to 20 minutes.
- For the buttercream, beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
- Add heavy cream or milk to achieve a smooth consistency, tint with food coloring if desired.
- Assemble the cooled macaron shells with the buttercream filling, refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.
