Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour into a bowl and set aside.
  2. Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form, gradually adding the granulated sugar until stiff peaks form.
  3. Fold in the sifted almond flour and powdered sugar mixture, adding food coloring if desired.
  4. Pipe heart shapes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Let the piped macarons rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour to form a dry skin.
  6. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and bake the macarons for 18 to 20 minutes.
  7. For the buttercream, beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  8. Add heavy cream or milk to achieve a smooth consistency, tint with food coloring if desired.
  9. Assemble the cooled macaron shells with the buttercream filling, refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.
