Soft, sweet, and bursting with flavors, these red velvet cinnamon rolls are perfect for any occasion with cream cheese frosting that adds the perfect finishing touch.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (filling)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed (filling)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (filling)
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional, filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (frosting)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (frosting)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (frosting)
  • 24 tbsp milk (to adjust frosting consistency)

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk in a saucepan and combine it with sugar and active dry yeast in a mixing bowl. Let it sit until frothy.
  2. Add melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla to the yeast mixture and stir well.
  3. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl, then add to the wet mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. For the filling, combine softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir in chocolate chips if desired.
  6. Roll out the dough and spread the filling evenly, then roll into a log and slice into 12 pieces.
  7. Place rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Adjust with milk as needed.
  10. Spread frosting over warm rolls and serve immediately.

Notes

For a creamier frosting, allow cream cheese to come to room temperature before mixing. Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
