Ingredients
Scale
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup whole milk, warmed
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 2 tbsp red food coloring
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (filling)
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed (filling)
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (filling)
- ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional, filling)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened (frosting)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar (frosting)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract (frosting)
- 2–4 tbsp milk (to adjust frosting consistency)
Instructions
- Warm the milk in a saucepan and combine it with sugar and active dry yeast in a mixing bowl. Let it sit until frothy.
- Add melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla to the yeast mixture and stir well.
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl, then add to the wet mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- For the filling, combine softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir in chocolate chips if desired.
- Roll out the dough and spread the filling evenly, then roll into a log and slice into 12 pieces.
- Place rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F and bake rolls for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Adjust with milk as needed.
- Spread frosting over warm rolls and serve immediately.
Notes
For a creamier frosting, allow cream cheese to come to room temperature before mixing. Store any leftovers in an airtight container.
