Homemade Classic Croissants

Flaky and buttery homemade croissants, perfect for breakfast or a snack.

  • Total Time: 120 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 large egg, for egg wash

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm milk and yeast; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and combine.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Roll the dough into a rectangle and place the cold butter on one half. Fold the other half over and seal the edges.
  5. Roll the dough out into a long rectangle and fold it in thirds. Repeat this process 3-4 times to create layers.
  6. Roll the dough into a rectangle again and cut into triangles.
  7. Roll each triangle from the base to the tip and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Let them rise for about 1-2 hours.
  9. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  10. Brush the croissants with the egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Cool slightly and enjoy with coffee or jam!

Notes

Ensure butter is cold for perfect flakiness. Let croissants cool completely before storing.
