Homemade Shepherd’s Pie

A classic comfort food with a savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes, perfect for family meals.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 pounds ground beef or lamb
  • 2 cups mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet and cook until browned. Stir in the mixed vegetables and cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Add the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, dried thyme, and dried rosemary. Let it simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Transfer the meat filling to a baking dish.
  6. In another pot, cover the diced potatoes with water and bring to a boil. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with milk, butter, salt, and pepper.
  7. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat filling in the baking dish. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese if desired.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve hot, paired with a salad or crusty bread. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
