Ingredients
Scale
- 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cups hot water
- 2 beef bouillon cubes
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 medium yellow onion, sliced into half-moons
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, crushed bouillon, onion powder, salt, and pepper until combined.
- Shape the mixture into oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the patties on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
- After browning, remove patties and set aside. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
- Add hot water, bouillon cubes, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder to the skillet to create the gravy base.
- Mix cornstarch with cold water to make a smooth mixture. Stir it into the skillet until the gravy thickens.
- Return patties to the skillet, coating them in gravy and simmer for about 3-5 minutes until cooked through.
- Serve the patties hot, smothered with gravy, alongside sides like mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
Notes
For best flavor, use high-quality ground beef and do not skip the browning step. Feel free to customize with your favorite herbs.
