Salisbury Steak

A comforting and classic Salisbury Steak dish featuring juicy beef patties smothered in rich gravy, perfect for family dinners.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 beef bouillon cubes
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced into half-moons
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, crushed bouillon, onion powder, salt, and pepper until combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and brown the patties on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  4. After browning, remove patties and set aside. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add minced garlic and sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add hot water, bouillon cubes, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and garlic powder to the skillet to create the gravy base.
  7. Mix cornstarch with cold water to make a smooth mixture. Stir it into the skillet until the gravy thickens.
  8. Return patties to the skillet, coating them in gravy and simmer for about 3-5 minutes until cooked through.
  9. Serve the patties hot, smothered with gravy, alongside sides like mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

Notes

For best flavor, use high-quality ground beef and do not skip the browning step. Feel free to customize with your favorite herbs.
