- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup warm water
- Oil for frying
- Honey or powdered sugar for serving
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the vegetable shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in warm water gradually until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thickness and cut into squares or circles.
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 375°F (190°C).
- Fry the dough until puffy and golden brown on both sides, about 1-2 minutes per side.
- Drain on paper towels and serve warm, drizzled with honey or dusted with powdered sugar.
Notes
Best served warm and fresh. These can also accompany savory dishes like soups or stews.
