Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying
  • Honey or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut in the vegetable shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in warm water gradually until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thickness and cut into squares or circles.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pan to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Fry the dough until puffy and golden brown on both sides, about 1-2 minutes per side.
  8. Drain on paper towels and serve warm, drizzled with honey or dusted with powdered sugar.
