Butter Chicken

Butter Chicken is a classic Indian dish known for its rich and creamy sauce, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners. This dish is simple to make, bursting with flavors, and pairs wonderfully with rice or naan.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 600 g chicken breast, diced
  • 150 g natural yogurt
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • 400 g canned tomatoes
  • 150 ml cream (or coconut milk for lactose-free)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix all the marinade ingredients. Add the chicken pieces and toss well. Let it marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (ideally overnight).
  2. Heat oil in a pan and cook the marinated chicken until golden brown (about 6-8 minutes). Remove it from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, melt the butter. Sauté the onion until it becomes translucent (about 5 minutes). Then add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Stir in the coriander, garam masala, and chili powder. Add the canned tomatoes and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Mix in the cream and sugar. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes. Adjust salt to your taste.
  6. Add the chicken back to the pan, mix well, and let it cook for another 5 minutes.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with basmati rice and naan.

Notes

For extra flavor, let the chicken marinate overnight. Adjust the spice level by adding more or less chili powder based on your taste. Using coconut milk instead of cream makes the dish lactose-free and adds a unique taste.
